Facts About Bulgaria

The capital of Bulgaria is Sofia.  The name Sofia means "Wisdom," and there is a statue in downtown Sofia of the Spirit of Wisdom.

Bulgaria is where yogurt was first invented.  If you look on the label of your yogurt (especially "Greek" yogurt), you will find lactobacillus bulgaricus listed as the active culture.

Bulgaria is a leading producer of rose oil.  Vast fields of roses can be found in the Kazanluk Valley.

It takes a little getting used to - Bulgarians shake their head from side to side to indicate "yes!"

Bulgaria is about the same size as the state of Tennessee. 

The Ottoman Turks controlled Bulgaria for almost 500 years.

Bulgaria has special mention in Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial and museum in Jerusalem.  When Adolf Hitler ordered King Boris III of Bulgaria to surrender Jews to concentration camps, the king refused.

Kiril and Methodius, two Orthodox monks, developed the Cyrillic alphabet in Bulgaria.  It is now used throughout the Slavic world, most notably in Russia.
