Avery and Elise, minutes after their first meeting on the front walk of the orphanage.  Photo by Jeff, Sept. 2010.

Many Bulgarians live in run-down apartments like these, leftovers from the Communist era.  Photo by Jeff from a moving car (sorry for the blur!), Mar. 2010.

This amazing photo puts together quite a lot of Bulgarian history in one shot.  The excavations in the center of the frame are of the ancient Roman city of Serdika.  In the foreground on the right is the Sveta Petka church from the 6th century.  In the distance is the Banya Bashi Mosque, which dates from the 16th century during the Ottoman Turkish occupation of Bulgaria.  On the upper extreme right you can see the upper floors of a shopping mall, constructed during Communist times for high-ranking Party members.  And on the left, Bulgaria's newest phase is represented by a McDonalds.

The interior of the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, Sofia's most recognizable landmark.  While this is the largest Orthodox church in Bulgaria, the style of the artwork is quite common throughout Bulgarian churches.

The National Palace of Culture just off Vitosha Blvd.  Picture taken by Jeff from the balcony of the apartment where we stayed on our first trip, Mar. 2010.
